La Noix du Périgord AOC

The Noix du Périgord AOC (Walnuts)

The Dordogne, Lot, Corrèze and Charente have combined forces to create an area within which the Noix du Périgord can grow in optimum soil and climatic conditions: the Noix du Périgord Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée zone.

The same Appellation applies to 3 products :

  • Fresh walnuts in shell, also called « primeur » walnuts start the season off.
  • Dried walnuts in shell then take over.
  • Périgord Walnut kernels can be eaten throughout the year.

The « Syndicat Professionnel de la noix et du cerneau de Noix du Périgord » has set up « La Route de la Noix » (the Walnut Road) along which you can follow the « Franquette » itinerary to visit the farms, restaurants, farm inns, museums, craftspeople etc, ... who participate in the scheme.

The Truffle

There are three basic requirements for the black truffle to grow : the presence of a « truffle tree », limestone terrain and a climate with a Mediterranean influence. The Lot brings all these factors together, and is one of the foremost truffle producing départements in France.

Duck and goose foie gras

The raising of geese and ducks, the production of foies gras, confits, breast of duck or goose, etc... remains essentially a small-scale, traditional family business, which is why the produce is of such high quality.

Croustilot, a collective trade mark

This is the pride of bakers in the Lot ; this traditional loaf is made only with wheat grown in the Lot.

Not to mention Cahors Wine, plum eau de vie, Quercy Melons, Quercy Farm Lamb, Quercy Saffron, the Golden Plum of Carennac,...

All this produce can be found on traditional markets throughout the year, or on Local Farmers' Markets in July and August, or in restaurants, where chefs make the best possible use of it.
